Hey Gorgeous People!
WATCH IN 4K/HD
Last day on my Zanzibar Travel Diary. In the very beginning, I took you through my Incredible Vacation as I set out Exploring Zanzibar: Stone Town & Forodhani Gardens. I got to see Zanzibar Stone Town and all its glory, the Swahili culture and don’t get me started on the Zanzibar food heaven delight at Forodhani! My taste buds are still dancing. Then next I shared my Very personal experience at Zanzibar Island: Nungwi Paradise Adventure. This was magical and definitely the highlight of my entire vacation. As I had planned to have a laid-back itinerary the rest of my stay. However, my vacation took another fun rollercoaster ride towards Prison Island also Known as Chunguu Island.
What had started as a beautiful morning, sunbathing at the rooftop turned out into yet another fun adventure! Okay am getting ahead of myself. Lets back it up for a second. My itinerary of the day was to have some me time, you know enjoy the day, do a bit of shopping and sunbathe till my melanin was popping from a mile. Well I did, for like a second, then it ended up raining. I did not despair and if I had learnt anything from my vacation stays in Zanzibar. is that, if it rains, that means something exciting is coming your way. and boy was i not wrong.
The rain killed my sunbathing vibe. and unleashed My Dora the explorer and I went strolling into the city and followed my nostrils into a Lunch spot downtown. Hey! you do remember the Vacation motto I sure hope so? Eat! then Eat! and Eat! some more. Thats exactky what I did.
After Lunch, that’s when my vacation took a major 180 degree turn up on the fun wagon, First Class please. I found myself 20 minutes out on the boat ride towards Prison Island. Prison Island also known as the Changuu Island lies about 30 minutes by boat from the Zanzibar Island. The prison thereon was never used to house prisoners as the name suggests. However, The island was once used by an Arab slave trader to contain the more troublesome slaves he had brought from the African mainland to prevent their escape before shipping them to the Arabian purchasers, or for auctioning in Zanzibar slave trade market. The slaves were dumped on the island.
What to Do at Prison Island
Visit Lloyd Mathew’s Architecture
In 1893, Lloyd Mathews built the prison. The prison idea was to send violent criminals from the Tanganyika mainland to the Prison Island. The Prison Island ended up being used as a quarantine center, instead of a prison, for yellow fever epidemics that once raged through the region. Prison Island remained in the ownership of the government which converted the newer quarantine buildings into a guest house.
See The Giant Tortoises and other wildlife
The old prison still remains standing, providing shelter for some of the giant tortoises which can now only be found on this island. The giant land tortoises were imported from Seychelles in the late 19th century. Some of which are over a hundred years old! Once on the island, you have the opportunity to feed and pet the tortoises, if you have time you may also like to take a stroll through the forested interior where you will see a wide variety of birds, colorful peacocks, bats, and beautiful butterflies. Keep your eyes peeled too for the shy and elusive Duikers – an unusual tiny antelope species.
Snorkeling and Enjoy the beautiful Indian Ocean
After the tour there’s a snorkeling option for those who’d like to get wet. All part of the budget by default. However since this was in-planned trip, I didn’t have my swim gear with me and I wasn’t ready to go snorkeling butt naked. It’s the one activity I regret not doing. This lives a beautiful window for another visit in Zanzibar. Soon rather than expected.————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————–
